Why Jewelry Stores Dislike Knowledgeable Customers

For decades, jewelers have had enjoyed the position of being the “keepers” of the knowledge about diamonds and gemstones. They stood behind jewelry counters and shared little tidbits of information about jewels to shoppers. The jeweler seemed to be talking down to the shopper, making them feel as if they should be grateful to even be in the store or touch the precious gems in the display case.

This monopoly of knowledge went hand in hand with the monopoly of supply. The only way you could purchase a diamond or precious gemstone was to buy in a jewelry store. The prices were artificially high with markups of 100% to 300% of wholesale costs. The factors that differentiated stores included the ornate decorations, the fancy display cases, and elaborate storefronts. Life was simple and very profitable for the jeweler. The shopper came in, the jeweler said this is what you should buy, and the shopper paid the price because they had no other options. Can you recall any poor jewelers before the millennium change in the year 2000?

It was about this time that the most feared word in the jeweler’s vocabulary began to change the industry forever. That word was Internet. Suddenly there were competitors springing up who could supply diamonds and jewelry delivered to your door, often at prices lower than could support the high overhead of the jewelry store. However, the greatest fear was that the hidden knowledge of diamonds and precious gemstones was available to any shopper who wanted to spend a little time researching online.

The jeweler of the past said here is what I have and which one do you want to buy? Then came the knowledgeable shopper armed with printouts of online diamond advice. Instead of simply asking for a one-carat diamond, the shopper now has a detailed list of requirements that all but guarantees that nothing in the store will meet their requirements, regardless of the price.

It is common for a diamond shopper today to say, “Here is what I want and I expect the lowest price in the country.” Then they present their list of requirements for their round diamond:
1) Carat weight exactly 1.27 because our first date was January 27th
2) At least G color
3) VS2 clarity but I do not want to be able to see anything under the microscope
4) Must have a GIA grading report dated in 2006 with Excellent cut grade
5) No fluorescence
6) At least Very Good for polish and symmetry
7) Girdle has to be Medium (nothing more or less will do) and faceted
8) Laser inscribed with the GIA number
9) Must be able to take to an independent appraiser who agrees with all grading
10) I need it in two days

Their parting remark is that they are shopping these same requirements with twenty other retailers and are going to buy from the one with the lowest price.

This is the jeweler’s nightmare because this is not how their business works. Their jewelry store caters to the impulse buyer who will come in, see something beautiful and buy with only a few encouraging words from the sales clerk. Spending hours of work to find the specific diamond the shopper wants and then paying the shipping and insurance to get it shipped next day is just more work than they want to do for a sale. Instead, they complain and wish for the return of the good old days, when Ma Bell controlled the telephones, gas was 59 cents a gallon and the secrets of the diamond industry were safely behind the jewelry counter.

Fortunately, for diamond and gemstone shoppers there are a new breed of diamond retailers available who not only encourage diamond education; they enjoy working with shoppers who know exactly what they want. These diamond brokers have access to the diamonds on the wholesale market and know how to find diamonds that meet the shopper’s requirement. Best of all, the diamond brokers have much lower overhead than a jewelry store so can find the exceptional diamonds at very low prices.

The competitive marketplace always seems to produce sources for services and goods that consumers demand. The online diamond broker is well suited to serve today’s well-knowledgeable and demanding diamond shopper.

The Inside Scoop About Buying Diamonds Online

Shopping for online diamond jewelry is easier than you may think. There are so many online jewelers to choose from and you get to shop from the convenience of your own home. As long as you do your homework and learn about diamonds and what to look for in online diamond jewelry, you should be fine.

There are horror stories out there about people paying thousands of dollars for diamonds online just to receive a fake jewel in the mail. My advice to ease your mind is stay away from certain auction sites because you never know what you may be getting.

Instead of using auctions stick with a reputable online jewelry store. The really cool thing about a lot of online jewelry stores is that they usually offer a grace period in which you can return your jewelry if you’re not satisfied. When somebody offers that kind of guarantee you really can’t go wrong.

Like I said before it is extremely important that you know exactly what to look for in diamonds before you start shopping for online diamond jewelry. Make sure that you’re clear about the different diamond cuts, clarity, color, and carat before you start looking.

And when you do find diamonds that you’re interested in don’t just stop there and automatically buy them. Shop around a little because you really will find a variety in pricing of online diamond jewelry. You may be able to find that exact same diamond at a different store for $200 less and with a better guarantee. So what exactly can you expect to pay for your diamonds? Like I said diamond prices really vary from place to place.

I’ll throw out some average prices that you’ll come across online. For a .51 carat G SI1 Emerald cut diamond you’ll probably pay a minimum of around $1200. A round brilliant that is about.32 carats G SI1 will cost you at least $500. If you like princess cut and you want around .46 carats G SI1 you’ll pay minimum of $800-$1200. And for a marquise cut about .49 carats G SI1 $1200 is the average minimum you’ll find online.

Now that you have an idea of what you’ll find in online diamond jewelry hopefully you’re ready to do some shopping. Remember that being informed is what’s going to make the biggest difference in the diamonds you find. Online diamond jewelry is not all discount or fake jewelry. There are many beautiful, genuine jewels online for you to choose from.

Grillz Gold Teeth - Bling from Teeth to Ring

Trends in hip hop jewelry change almost every day. Sometimes, however, trends come along and stick around for a while. Spinner necklaces and the like are just the beginning. These days, the hottest ‘bling’ going around are custom grillz, or gold teeth. Enhanced by the popularity of rappers like Lil Jon and Paul Wall, grillz are custom pairs of gold, silver, or platinum teeth that are encrusted with diamonds or other gemstones.

For fans of hip hop who want to get their own grill or set of gold teeth, there are low-cost solutions out there. Of course, if you want the real thing like Paul Wall wears, you will be spending a pretty penny. However, you can find grillz made of plated rhodium and cubic zirconia that can fit any budget. Here are a few pointers on what to look for from different types of grillz.

Gold Teeth & Grillz - Gold grillz can be found online from many vendors. The key to buying the right set is in the construction. Remember, this jewelry will be in your mouth, so you want to be sure that it is made correctly. Bling isn’t that cool when it is in the form of a loose stone stuck in your throat. Many gold grillz are one size fits all, so be sure that you find a pair like this if you have an irregular set of teeth or gums. Also, for genuine gold, double check the carat rating and whether they are solid or plated. The price should tell you but some sellers are not clear enough.

Diamond Grillz - One thing matters above anything else when it comes to diamond grillz, and that is the setting of the stones. Like mentioned above, these pieces will be in your mouth. If you have a poorly set stone, you risk the chance of it falling out while wearing your grill. This could cause you to chip your tooth, or worse, choke on the stone. Since these will be in your mouth, you do not need to find the highest quality stones for your grill. You can save a bunch of money by getting lower quality diamonds.

Hip Hop Grillz - Many rappers have their own signature grillz. You can find replicas of these specific styles on many websites. Some will be named after rappers, but will not be replicas of the ones that the rapper wears. Be sure you double check and pictures that you have of what you want to make a perfect match.

To find the best places for grillz or gold teeth online, use the major search engines and search away. You will find plenty of results that offer you a wide variety of choices.

Bridal Jewelry and The Dress

We all know that when a bride to be has already spent practically twenty years planning her wedding before she even knows who the groom is, the image that she dreams of is how she will look on her wedding day. Every little detail counts and is carefully pondered upon before making the all important wedding decisions.

The first part of the dream is “The Dress“, the wedding gown, her day, her style. The selection of the wedding gown is one of the most important items a bride to be must decide upon. The dress no matter what the style should always be a selection that the bride to be feels elegant and beautiful in. Whether a bride envisions herself in a simple white gown, a lacy gown or a bright pink gown, the bride’s attitude in the dress is what makes that bride an individual and beautiful bride on her wedding day. The selection of the wedding gown should always remain fun and as stress free as possible, buy what makes you feel beautiful.

Now that the dress has been chosen, you have been measured and the all important deposit has been made, you are committed to “The Dress”, you need to finish off your bridal look for your wedding day. This is where all of the little details that you hem and haw about for hours come together to make a magnificent and magical combination of the perfect bride! The shoes, the garter, the something old something new and last but certainly not least, the bridal jewelry!

The bridal jewelry that the bride to be decides upon should coordinate with the wedding gown she has selected to wear for the big wedding day. Keeping in mind the style of your dress, the bridal jewelry selection must be made with as careful of attention to detail as when choosing your wedding gown. The bridal jewelry chosen by the bride should finish off your look and bring the entire ensemble together.

Some suggestions to follow as to the style of dress you are wearing to match the style of the bridal jewelry you will wear follows.

Open Backed Dress - When wearing an open back dress, adding a bridal jewelry lariat is a great way to add the final detail to show off your beautiful wedding gown. A bridal lariat is a piece of bridal jewelry that the bride wears around her neck like a normal necklace; however; the back of the neck will have a longer dangling piece of jewelry to finish off the look. Depending upon the piece of bridal jewelry, lariats can be purchased that are adjustable, which will be a better fit for any bride with a backless dress. Another great way to show off a backless dress is a bridal jewelry choker or bridal jewelry collar with a hanging jewel embellishment in the back. Bridal chokers have become a very modern and popular choice for brides that want an edgier bridal look and feel that still embraces the classic and elegant bride.

V Neck Dress - When a bride is wearing a v neck style wedding gown, Y- drop necklaces are a very nice touch for bridal necklace jewelry. The Y- drop necklace takes the same angles as the v neck wedding gown line. Bridal chokers are also a great selection for the bride that is wearing a v line dress. The choker gives clean lines and does not distract from the v neck style of dress. Regular simple and double strand necklaces also work very nicely for this style of wedding gown, as they provide a simple but elegant style that compliments the v neck.

Square Top Dress - For the brides that select a very traditional square top wedding gown, simple single strand and double strand bridal jewelry necklaces are a great way to finish off the neckline. They bring contrast and attract the eye towards the cut of the dress. For a very clean lined look, bridal jewelry chokers are the most perfect style of bridal jewelry necklines for the square top dress. The bridal choker has become more and more popular as the years pass, now with so many options available; brides are finding it easier to select the perfect bridal jewelry choker that fits the style of their gowns.

The Sweetheart Gown - The sweetheart gown style of wedding gown is accessorized nicely with a y - drop necklace, as it follows the line of the top of the wedding gown. Also with this style of gown, bridal chokers go nicely, as well as pendant necklace and simple round necklaces. The sweetheart gown is such a nice choice; the bridal jewelry that you select to wear with the gown should always compliment that neckline.

Strapless Dress - When a bride wears a strapless gown, there are many options for the bridal jewelry necklace. A bridal jewelry choker is such a great way to compliment the line of the top of the dress. A choker brings a symmetrical and parallel line, and adding a sparkly pearl or swarovski crystal bridal jewelry choker or collar with a strapless gown is so elegant and sophisticated. In addition to the bridal choker, simple pendant necklaces as well as single strand and multi-strand necklaces make great choices for the strapless style wedding gown. Wearing a strapless gown draws much attention to the shoulders and neck region, so wearing the perfect bridal jewelry that looks spectacular with that line of dress is very important for your bridal look.

Halter Top Dress - The halter top dress calls for a certain type of bridal jewelry. A dangle backed necklace or lariat are perfect for this line of wedding gown. The attention is drawn on the front and the back, making use of the entire wedding gown to compliment your bridal jewelry. A halter dress also looks beautifully pulled together with a y drop necklace or pendant necklace. The y drop necklace was just about made for this style of wedding gown; the y drop centers the entire look and feel of this type of gown.

Off The Shoulder Dress - When wearing an off of the shoulder dress, any style of bridal jewelry necklace works. A regular single or double strand necklace can frame out your entire bridal look with simplicity. If you choose to wear a bridal jewelry choker, that brings the eyes up to the face with ease as it finished off your bridal look. Y drop and lariats work great with the off the shoulder dress. Depending upon how much of your back shows, a lariat can look elegant from behind when standing at the alter, and a y drop necklace really brings focus to the bride with this gown. What ever style you choose for this line of dress, you cannot go wrong.

One Shoulder Dress or Asymmetric Dress - With the asymmetric gown, it is best to choose a great bracelet and pair of earrings, as a necklace will look unbalanced and unnatural. The one shoulder dress is a bold move; wear a bold bracelet and glamorous earrings.

Scoop Necked Gown - When wearing the scooped neck gown a simple one or multi-strand necklace is perfect. A necklace such as the simple one to five strand bridal necklaces will frame out the top of your wedding gown perfectly. A bridal jewelry choker is also a really nice selection for this style of dress. It is a simple and even topper to the scoop neckline, a great selection.

Whatever your dress selection, choose bridal jewelry that makes you feel gorgeous when you put it on. Your bridal jewelry is your icing on the cake and the selection of the bridal jewelry is just as important as the selection of the gown. Your bridal jewelry will be bridal accessories that you cherish for a life time. You will never wear your wedding gown after the big day, but you can wear your bridal jewelry when ever you want to. Wearing your bridal jewelry is your memory to the most special day in your life. What ever your bridal jewelry selection, look spectacular on your wedding day because you waited for this special moment for a lifetime!

The Colored Gemstone Education - Amethyst The Color For Kings

Amethyst has long been a favorite gem of Kings and Queens for its royal purple hues. The gem, the most precious member of the quartz family, exhibits color ranging from pale liliac to deep purple. Amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were worn by Catherine the Great as well as Egyptian royalty.

Through the ages, various special properties have also been prescribed to Amethyst. The Greeks and Romans considered it a strong antidote against drunkenness and drank wine from goblets carved out of the gem. Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that Amethyst could dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence. The stone also supposed to bring peace of mind to the wearer and prevent fatal poisoning.

In some legends, the stone also represents piety, celibacy and dignity. In Tibet, for instance, Amethyst is considered sacred to Buddha and rosaries are often made from it. In the middle ages the gem was an important ornamentation for Catholic Church and other religions. In fact, it was considered the stone of bishops, and they still often wear Amethyst rings.

The birth stone for February, Amethyst is an extremely popular gem for jewelry because of its regal color, variety of sizes and shapes, affordability and wide range of hues. It also is the recommended gem for couples celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary.

The stone is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Argentina, as well as in Zambia, Namibia, and other African nations. Very dark Amethyst in small sizes also is mined in Australia. But the ideal fine quality Amethyst was set by a Siberian variety, often called Russian or Uralian Amethyst, which is now considered a defunct source.

Generally, South American Amethyst tends to come in larger sizes than African Amethyst. But the African variety has a reputation for having deeper color intensity and is therefore considered more valuable. The African version also is harder to come by than Amethyst mined from South America. Most today’s Amethyst comes out of Brazil.

The finest and most valuable Amethyst are very clear, with very deep color, and they sometimes exhibit reddish or rose overtones. Some stones are so over-saturated with color they have areas that are blacked out, which can negatively impact their value.

Amethyst is available in a wide range of calibrated sizes and shapes, including many fancy cuts. Large fine stones are sold in limited sizes but generally the stone is cut in standardized dimensions. Paler shades, sometimes called “Rose of France”, were common in Victorian jewelry. Banding, darker and lighter zones of color, is also a common occurrence. Occasionally, Amethyst is even found combined with its sister quartz Citrine into a single stone called Ametrine.

The most common enhancements to Amethyst are heat and irradiation. The stone, which rank a 7 on Mohs hardness scale, is considered durable enough for everyday wear. However, care should be taken not to expose the gem to excessive amounts of bright sunlight, as this can cause its color to fade.

Horse Jewelry

“As full of spirit as the month of May, and as gorgeous as the sun in Midsummer.” Shakespeare aptly describes the beauty and strength of a magnificent horse. A horse is an embodiment of freedom and majesty. It is a symbol of unification of the elements - the heat of fire and the force of wind. Horses have been and will always be one of the most popular themes of jewelry. Horse jewelry captures the true spirit of the splendid animal and lets you sport it.

Whether etched or painted, the figure of a horse on a pendant, cameo or even on the dial of a wristwatch exudes sheer force. Equally elegant and grand are little figures of horses cast in gold or silver, dangling from earrings and bracelets. Many other kinds of jewelry, like necklaces, rings, cuff links and tie tacks, are fashioned after horses. Not only jewelry but other accessories like key rings, hair clips and zipper pulls are also made to convey the raw equestrian power. Horse jewelry is often made of precious metals like gold, silver and platinum, and is studded with diamonds and other gemstones. In addition to jewelry with horse images, jewelry with horseshoe designs is also popular. Equally in style is jewelry made of real horse hair.

Horse jewelry is a perfect adornment for those who love horses. It not only expresses your love for the wonderful friend that a horse is, but also conveys the wild freedom that it symbolizes. Horse ornaments are not only great keepsakes, but also act as perfect gifts for horse enthusiasts. And they look dazzling!

Pearl Treatments

All pearls are processed in some way. Akoya and
Freshwater pearls are bleached, and all pearls are
cleaned and polished before they are sold. There
are some treatments to take note of on cultured
pearls that will change the aesthetic qualities of
the pearl.

After harvesting cleaning and polishing a
low-quality cultured pearl if the pearl still does
not have a good luster or color, the farmer has
very few options. If the pearls is a good
candidate for treatment, this is the most common
and economically sensible thing for the farmer to
do. There are three main treatments are used on
low-quality pearls.

Dyeing- The use of silver nitrate to darken the
nacre of the pearl. Irradiation- The use of gamma
rays to darken the nucleus of the pearl in akoya
pearls and the nacre layers in freshwater pearls.
Luster treatments- A coating is placed on the
surface of the pearl to enhance the luster.

Silver nitrate has been used for decades to darken
the appearance of the peal. The chemical
penetrates the layer of nacre and has a chemical
reaction with light or hydrogen sulfides gas to
organic or inorganic dyes to produce another color
variation. This treatment is very popular in
treating fresh water pearls. Sometimes the farmer
will want to create other colors then black the
farmer in this case can use organic or inorganic
dyes to make the color variations. Akoya pearls
are also routinely “pinked” this is done when they
would like to make a more rose overtone.

Irradiation has a different effect on freshwater
to saltwater and cultured pearls. Gamma rays do
not affect the nacre layers of a saltwater
cultured pearl, but will darken the nucleus of the
pearl. Saltwater pearls that are irradiated will
be gray to blue. Freshwater irradiated pearls can
become very dark, some of these freshwater treated
pearls may also have an intense metallic sheen
over their surface.

Coating a pearls to enhance its luster is not
widely practiced and is frowned upon. The coating
is like putting clear nail polish. The coating may
eventually chip or peel, leaving a low-luster
pearl this is a treatment to watch for.

Luster treatments are very hard to find. The most
basic way to find the luster treatment is to
compare an untreated strand with the strand that
you think has been treated. You can put the strand
under 50x magnification. The untreated pearl will
have a scaly nacre surface and the coated pearl
will have a smooth, glass like surface.

All pearls are processed in some way. You as the
pearl consumers should be aware of all the
treatments before you are going to buy these
classic beauties to add to your jewelry
collection.

Hurricanes and Jewelry Making

Many people have a hobby of making jewelry and this is a good hobby because you can sell what you have made for quite a bit of money. There are many people who are willing to spend twice or three times as much as the precious stones that you put into your jewelry.

If you are considering getting into the jewelry business or if you are trying to find time to expand your business and make more jewelry so you can sell it, then perhaps during the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season you can use this time while you are evacuated and cannot work or if you decide to stay behind to make jewelry.

Making jewelry can be a great business and a very fun hobby and some of the people who I have met who are experts in the field also sell their jewelry on the Internet. I have met some super people who specialize in jewelry making. Perhaps you should consider buying some jewelry from someone who has had to evacuate their home and is doing this to make extra money as a way to help those citizens of our nation who have been deprived of their jobs and forced to leave their homes. Perhaps you might consider spending the time in making some jewelry of your own. Please consider this and 2006.
